Chair, Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development Committee
Dear Friends:
Welcome to my website. You will find news here about our work in the New York State Assembly as well about local activities in my 30th District that includes the neighborhoods of Maspeth and Woodside plus parts of Long Island City, Middle Village, Astoria and Sunnyside.
I am a life-long resident of Maspeth and mother who has worked for more than 25 years to improve the quality of life in Queens, first as a community activist, later as a member of my local Community Boards, and now in public service. Among my most proud achievements is the establishment of Maspeth Town Hall, an important community center for people of all ages. I came to the Assembly in 1998 after working in local government for the Borough of Queens where I was the first Director of Marketing & Tourism.
In the Assembly, I am currently Chair of House Operations and serve on the Agriculture, Consumer Affairs & Protection, Government Operations, Labor, Racing & Wagering and Tourism Committees. Over the years, I have worked to provide increased funding for education, health care and seniors. I have also secured millions of dollars for important cultural institutions in Queens as well as community organizations in the 30th District that provide vital services to youth, seniors and small businesses.
My legislation signed into law has resulted in tougher standards on farms and in the food industry to ensure the safety of food in our supermarkets. As Chair of the Sub-Committee on Child Product Safety, I called attention to dangerous toys on the market and passed a law that banned the sale of box cutters to minors.
Currently, my highest priority is enactment of the New York Child Victims Act, a bill that will extend the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse crimes. It will give victims additional time to report the wrongs done against them. The bill will also suspend the civil statute for one year to provide justice for victims who have been time-barred and expose pedophiles who continue to prey on youngsters. You will find more information on this site about the Child Victims Act and why it is so important that it become law.
Thank you again for visiting my website. Please call or email my office at the address below if we can help with a community problem or issue. And please come back to this site again to read more news about State government and the New York State Assembly.
Sincerely,
Margaret M. Markey
