- 2014 New York Public Library Summer Reading Challenge:
I joined Sadeqwa Atkinson, Branch Manager of the Columbus Library, to honor local children who completed the New York Public Librarys Summer Reading Challenge. - Hearing about a Gottfried law working:
At the Night Out Against Crime event in Hells Kitchen Park with Jeff Hobbs and Dipal Shah of the Midtown Community Court, a local court that targets quality-of-life and low-level offenses. The Court often uses a law I recently wrote that lets a person forced into prostitution by human traffickers to have his or her criminal record erased, enabling victims of trafficking to move ahead in life without the burden of a criminal record. - Night Out Against Crime in Chelsea:
At the annual Night Out Against Crime at Fulton Houses in Chelsea with Miguel Acevedo, the President of the Fulton Houses Tenants Association, and Deputy Inspector Michele Irizzary, the new commanding officer of the 10th Precinct. Its a great event that supports community crime prevention efforts and celebrates the diversity of our city. - 2014 Heritage of Pride parade:
With Senator Brad Hoylman and Assembly Member Daniel ODonnell at this years LGBT pride parade in Manhattan. I will work closely with them and other colleagues to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) that I sponsor in the Assembly. - Rent help for more older tenants:
Ive worked for years to increase the income eligibility level for seniors applying for a Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE). This year, we were successful, and SCRIE is now available to older tenants in rent-regulated apartments whose household income is $50,000 or less. My community office can help you apply. - New law to prevent overdose deaths:
As Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, I worked closely with bill sponsor Assembly Member Jeff Dinowitz, other legislators, the NYS Health Department, and a coalition of advocacy groups like VOCAL-NY to draft and pass legislation allow use of the drug naloxone to save the lives of persons at risk of dying from drug overdoses, which are now the leading cause of accidental death in New York State. - Medical marijuana bill becomes law:
After introducing legislation for 17 years to allow medical use of marijuana in New York State, I was particularly gratified when the Governor signed my bill into law in July. Senate bill sponsor Diane Savino and I celebrated with advocates in the Capitol after the bill passed both houses of the legislature. Im sponsoring the NY Health single-payer bill in the Assembly. Publicly funded, single-payer health care in New York State would insure everyone, provide better coverage, and save billions. - Fast Food Forward Campaign:
Rallying with fast food workers for fair pay and a union! With State Sen. Brad Hoylman. Boro. Pres. Gale Brewer was also there. (Sept. 4, 2014)
