On Memorial Day, it was an honor to be asked to say a few words at the Ceremony on the Setauket Village Green before the start of the parade. As the Village Green was the site of the Battle of Setauket and the gravesite of Abraham Woodhull, leader of the Setauket Culper Spy ring, was just behind the Setauket Presbyterian Church, my remarks began with remembering the first veterans who gave their lives for our country. Many, many have fought and died in the centuries since, and we hold in our hearts the memory of them all, both the named and the unknown.

GREENWAY NOW OPENED The Setauket-Port Jeff Station Greenway officially opened on May 10th 2014. Opening ceremonies were held at each end of the 3.5 mile greenway that follows the NYSDOT right of way once slated to become the Route 25A Bypass. The finished Greenway is a wonderful culmination of more than 20 years of work. Thanks to all who made this project possible! Assemblyman Steve Englebright and Senator Ken LaValle were in Port Jefferson on March 21st to call on LIPA to start the necessary steps to the repowering of the Port Jeff power plant. Village residents were out in full force to amplify this message. Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie Cartright also attended.

Assemblyman Steve Englebright met with student musicians from the All-County Jazz Ensemble who performed at the State Capitol on March 4th during the annual Suffolk County Music Educator Association (SCMEA) Day. This annual event, part of NYSSMA – New York State School Music Association's MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH, raises awareness about the importance of music education in our schools.

Meeting with Longwood’s Newest Leaders
Assemblyman Englebright met recently with Ivan Fajardo and Gabriel Peralta from Longwood High School who are participants in The Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (2014). The Institute selects young people with leadership potential throughout the state to participate in the program which provides a firsthand look at New York State's legislative process. Ivan and Gabriel met with Assemblyman Englebright in his Setauket District office to discuss legislation they will debate in March when the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute holds their annual “Legislative Mock Session” where students will take over the New York State Assembly chambers in Albany to debate actual bills impacting their communities.

I joined with my Long Island Assembly and Senator colleagues of February 8th, 2014 at the 10th annual Longwood Regional Legislative Breakfast in Middle Island where we met with school officials representing 28 districts in Suffolk County about eliminating the Gap Elimination Adjustment, or GEA.

The GEA was first applied to the 2009-10 state budget as a way to reduce New York’s then $10 billion deficit. Long Island schools have lost nearly $992 million in state aid through the GEA during that time.

I am sponsoring legislation with Assemblyman Hennessey (A.8720)to repeal the gap elimination adjustment beginning with the 2014-2015 school year.

Grand Opening of the renovated and expanded Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook Medicine

The Burn Center recently underwent a multi-million dollar transformation, which significantly increased the center’s size and created an enhanced environment for our patients’ care. The grand opening took place on January 16, 2014.

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center at Stony Brook Medicine is the only designated burn care facility for the more than 1.5 million Suffolk County residents. The center coordinates burn services throughout the region, and conducts training and research in burn care.
