Assemblyman Michael Benedetto: Fighting for NYC Schools

“Providing a quality education for all New York City children continues to be my top priority, which is why I worked hard to deliver record school aid increases for the second straight year.”

– Assemblyman Michael Benedetto

Securing NYC’s share of state education dollars

As Chair of the Education Subcommittee for Students with Special Needs and a former teacher with 35 years of experience, Assemblyman Benedetto understands the importance of a solid education. That’s why he helped pass a state budget continuing the Assembly’s commitment to the Campaign for Fiscal Equity plan. The budget includes:

  • a $644 million increase for New York City schools

  • $450 million for universal pre-k

  • $85 million for additional programs and restorations, including libraries, adult literacy education and independent living centers

  • $1.6 million for background checks for prospective school employees

Keeping college affordable

To combat the rising cost of higher education and address growing faculty shortages, Assemblyman Benedetto fought for a state budget that:

  • rejects tuition hikes at CUNY and SUNY schools

  • restores $15.4 million for the Tuition Assistance Program

  • ensures significant funding for college opportunity programs such as EOP, HEOP, SEEK, Liberty Partnership and College Discovery
