Dear Neighbor,

The lazy days of summer are upon us. To encourage our children to stay active both mentally and physically, I am proud to sponsor the 2010 Summer Reading and Exercise Challenge.

Reading books can be a fun, leisurely activity that doesn’t require having to spend any money. Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer perform better academically in the fall. It is also important for our children to be physically active as part of a healthy lifestyle. Kids who exercise regularly will have stronger muscles and bones, see an increase in energy, and have a better outlook on life.

Mark the enclosed calendar for each day in July and August that you and your child read and exercise together. When there are 40 or more days marked off, your child has earned a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading and Exercise Certificate. Fill out the back of this pamphlet and return it, along with the calendar, to me. I’ll see that your child receives a certificate.

Your local library is an excellent resource for reading material. I’ve also suggested some physical activities for you and your child to perform.
