Festivals, Foliage And Family Fun: Celebrate The Best Of Fall In Central NY

Column by Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

Summer has drawn to a close, and autumn has officially arrived in New York. For many, this is the most beautiful time of year. Across the state, residents and visitors can take in the brilliant fall foliage, wander through state and local parks to enjoy crisp air and scenic trails, or simply admire the creativity of neighborhoods decked out in Halloween spirit. Here in Central New York, the season offers no shortage of ways to enjoy all that fall has to offer.

Kick off your weekend by celebrating Everything Fall at Oswego’s Pumpkin Festival in Washington Square Park. Enjoy live music, craft, food and beverage vendors, and a Port-A-Globe puppet theater show. Fans of “Wicked” can meet Elphaba, Glinda and Dorothy, with plenty of photo opportunities. The event is hosted by the Oswego YMCA and runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, and Sunday, Oct. 5.

A great and safe way for kids to gather candy this Halloween is the Fifth Annual Trunk or Treat returning Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 3 p.m. at Oswego Speedway, 300 E. Albany St. The event will showcase festive decorations, creative displays and plenty of Halloween spirit.

In Cayuga County, Champions for Life will host their first-ever Harvest Festival at Everest Park at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Oct 4. Enjoy hayrides, facepainting, plenty of food and drink, a petting zoo and more.

If you’re in the mood for a scare, look no further than the Van Boo Park Walk in the Dark. Happening Oct. 25-26, from 4 – 8 p.m. at 90 Wilson Road in Central Square. The spooky but family friendly evening will take you along 1.5 miles of wooded trails illuminated with over 200 hand carved jack-o’-lanterns.

For those interested, New York’s fall foliage guide can be found here. Fall won’t be around forever. I encourage everyone to partake in community events that make this time of year so meaningful. Visit your favorite orchard for apple picking with friends, cheer on a local football team or spend a Saturday exploring a fall craft fair. These moments remind us of the beauty of autumn and the importance of supporting local businesses and artisans.
