With the UPS/Teamsters Contract Set to Expire at the End of the Month, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara Sends Letter to UPS CEO

Calls for Fair Negotiations with Teamsters including Fair Wages, Reasonable Workload, Job Security, and Respect and Dignity

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara has written a letter to UPS CEO, Ms. Carol B. Tomé, expressing his strong support for the hardworking members of the Teamsters from Local 294 and their ongoing efforts to secure a fair contract with UPS. The Assemblyman believes it is crucial to stand in solidarity with the workers who contribute significantly to the success of the company. The letter may be viewed here.

“With the UPS/Teamsters Contract set to expire at the end of this month, it is disheartening to hear that the workers, including part-time employees, who play an essential role in UPS's operations, are faced with the prospect of striking due to issues such as excessive work demands, stagnant wages, and inequitable treatment,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara.

In the letter, Assemblyman Santabarbara specifically requests that UPS CEO, Ms. Carol B. Tomé, consider the following points as negotiations progress:

  1. Fair Wages: The dedicated workers at UPS deserve fair compensation that reflects their contributions to the company's success. It is crucial to ensure that wages are competitive and commensurate with the demands of the job.
  2. Reasonable Workload: The employees' well-being should be a top priority. It is important to establish reasonable workloads that do not compromise their physical and mental health. Providing adequate rest periods and addressing issues of excessive overtime would contribute to a healthier and more productive workforce.
  3. Job Security: The stability and security of employment are vital for the workers and their families. UPS should strive to protect jobs and resist any measures that might result in unnecessary layoffs or downsizing. Investing in the growth and development of the workforce will contribute to a more loyal and motivated team.
  4. Respect and Dignity: Upholding a respectful and inclusive work environment is essential for fostering strong employee morale. Ensuring fair treatment, addressing instances of discrimination, and promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives will create a harmonious workplace where employees can thrive.
“UPS has achieved remarkable success in recent years, with record profits and expanding operations. While these achievements are commendable, it is vital to recognize that they would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Teamsters,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara. “As a company that prides itself on its commitment to its employees and customer service, it is crucial that UPS honors its obligations to its workforce.”
