Statement from New York State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara on Support for Mohonasen Central School District

“Mayor Adams’ thoughtless decisions continue forcing everyone into an unjust and unfair situation, now placing school districts under severe financial strain as they struggle to accommodate a significant number of additional students who require English as a Second Language Education.

I continue to urge our federal representatives to intervene and help resolve this inequitable situation. Assurances were made that the migrant situation would not impose any additional burden on localities, and it is essential that this commitment is honored.

New York City Mayor Adams must immediately allocate the additional funding that will be required by the Mohonasen School District and any other affected districts in these circumstances. The teachers and staff in the Mohonasen School District here in Rotterdam are dedicated to educating children in our community, but they must be provided with sufficient resources.

Additionally, it’s important for the State Department of Education to also recognize the significant challenges that the Mohonasen School District is now facing. I urge the Department to work collaboratively with both teachers and administrators to address these issues and provide any assistance needed, including guidance, funding, and flexibility with certifications.”
