In the letter, Santabarbara emphasizes, "I am reaching out to implore immediate action from the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding the distressing and pervasive issue of train derailments, which has now reverberated within the boundaries of the Town of Amsterdam, NY—a vital segment of my constituency. Last week, a CSX train, bearing 17 cars including nine empty petroleum gas tanks and assorted mixed freight cars, experienced a derailment. Fortunately, no leaks were observed. Nonetheless, the potential ramifications were potentially catastrophic, inflicting severe disruptions upon both commercial and passenger rail services."

Santabarbara accentuates the nationwide nature of this challenge, citing a notable precedent earlier this year when a train derailment in East Palestine prompted evacuations and left an adverse ecological imprint.
