Santabarbara statement on proposed closing of VA in Schenectady
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara today announced he is advocating for local veterans following the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ proposed closure of the Schenectady Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC).
“I have serious concerns about how this decision could affect veterans in Schenectady and across the Capital Region,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “While the VA aims to improve services, closing a trusted community clinic may create new barriers to care — especially for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and those without reliable transportation.”
Santabarbara has contacted VA leadership and is working with federal partners to urge reconsideration of the plan. He has sent letters to Albany VA Medical Center Executive Medical Center Director Darlene DeLancey, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congressman Paul Tonko seeking their support to keep the clinic open.
“Our veterans deserve quality, convenient healthcare close to home,” Assemblyman Santabarbara added. “The Schenectady clinic provides continuity of care and peace of mind for those who served. We should be strengthening access — not reducing it.”
Santabarbara said he will continue working with leaders at all levels of government to ensure veterans’ needs remain a top priority.
“I will keep advocating strongly to make sure our veterans are heard and their care is protected.”
