Statement from Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara Condemning the Hateful Comments Following the Loss of Harbe Nagi
Chair, New York State Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities
“This week, our community came together with one hope – that 7-year-old Harbe Nagi would be found safe. People of every background volunteered, shared his photo, searched, and prayed for his safe return. That outpouring of support reflected the very best of who we are.
That’s why the hateful comments made in the wake of Harbe’s death have been so deeply disturbing. No family mourning the loss of a child should have to endure prejudice, cruelty, or hatred during one of the most painful moments of their lives.
As the father of a son with autism, this tragedy has touched me in a deeply personal way. My heart remains with Harbe’s family, and I hope they continue to find strength in the love and support around them during this difficult time.
The hateful words of a few should never define this tragedy. What should be remembered is how our community came together with hope, compassion, and love for Harbe and his family. Let us honor Harbe’s memory by choosing kindness, rejecting hate, and continuing to support his family with the care and respect they deserve.”
