Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara today announced that Assembly bill A.29, the legislation designating New York as a Purple Heart State, is in effect as New York observes its first Purple Heart Day since the bill was signed into law in November, as Chapter 489 of the Laws of 2025.

Purple Heart Day, observed each year on August 7th, honors the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who were wounded or killed in action while serving our nation. This year’s observance marks an important milestone as New York recognizes its first Purple Heart Day as a Purple Heart State.

“Purple Heart recipients have shown extraordinary courage and sacrifice in defense of our nation,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “By designating New York as a Purple Heart State, we are making a lasting commitment to recognize their service and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. On this Purple Heart Day, we honor those who were wounded in combat, remember those who gave their lives, and thank all Purple Heart recipients and their families for the sacrifices they have made for our country.”

Assemblyman Santabarbara co-sponsored the legislation designating New York as a Purple Heart State and has long supported efforts to recognize Purple Heart recipients. In 2016, he launched the Purple Heart Parking Program, encouraging municipalities, businesses, veterans organizations, and community partners throughout the region to designate reserved parking spaces honoring Purple Heart recipients and raising awareness of their service and sacrifice.

“The freedoms we enjoy every day have come at a tremendous cost,” Assemblyman Santabarbara said. “Today, I encourage all New Yorkers to take a moment to recognize the courage, strength, and sacrifice of our Purple Heart recipients and to remember those who never made it home.”
