Senate, Assembly Agree on Limo Legislation

10 bills expected to be passed

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara has continued the push for more limousine safety measures in the wake of the 2018 Schoharie County limousine crash that claimed the lives of 20 people and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) releasing its initial report on its investigation.

To date, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara has sponsored a number of bills addressing limo safety aimed at protecting passengers. The measures range from the use of seatbelts and anti-intrusion bars to requiring for special licensing for drivers, and giving DOT the power to impound vehicles that do not meet the most current safety standards.

Of the 10 bills agreed upon, Santabarbara is a sponsor of 5 and a co-sponsor of several other bills to improve limousine safety, including measures to impose stricter oversight on stretch limousines and their drivers and establish methods to report safety issues.

“We cannot forget the tragic crash in Schoharie that claimed the lives of 20 people – deemed the worst transportation disaster in nearly a decade,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara. “These bills are aimed at preventing tragedies by strengthening regulations and improving standards to ensure the safety of passengers," Santabarbara added. “The need for updated laws governing stretch limousines is apparent and simply cannot wait. On behalf of the families affected by the tragic events in Schoharie and Long Island, I urge the Assembly, Senate and the Governor to work together to get these bills signed into law – they are all essential to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.”
