Statement From Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora) On Submission Of State DREAM Act

One of my promises to the people of the 147th Assembly District was that I would protect New York State tax dollars from going toward educating illegal immigrants. On Wednesday, Speaker Sheldon Silver reintroduced a New York State version of the DREAM Act. This bill would make the children of illegal immigrants eligible to receive state aid for college. I will not turn my back on the promises I made in seeking this office.

The government gets its tax dollars from hardworking New Yorkers who are looking to attain the ‘American Dream’. They do not work day in and day out to subsidize $20 million to encourage illegal entry into our nation or our state. This bill uses government resources to encourage illegal activity. I don’t think Albany can afford another ill-advised social program; let alone one for those who have broken the law. I’m working to lower the tax burden of middle-class families, not leverage the future of illegal immigrants on their livelihoods.
