DeStefano Applauds Signing of Amended “Gio’s Law” to Expand Emergency EpiPen Use by First Responders
Assemblyman Joe DeStefano (R,C-Medford) is pleased to announce Gov. Hochul has signed legislation amending the 2019 “Gio’s Law” (A.7961) to clarify that all counties in New York, outside of New York City, can enact local laws allowing law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMS personnel to carry and administer EpiPens during emergencies.
This legislation ensures counties with populations exceeding one million, such as Nassau and Suffolk counties, can equip first responders with this critical tool to address anaphylactic health emergencies. The measure builds on existing law to remove any ambiguity and ensure life-saving treatments are available when every second counts.
The legislation was first introduced by Suffolk County Legislator Dominick Thorne and passed by the Suffolk County Legislature. It became a statewide reality through bipartisan collaboration, with DeStefano co-sponsoring the bill in the Assembly and Sen. Julia Salazar (D,WF-18th District) working with Sen. Dean Murray (R,C-3rd District) to secure its passage in the Senate.
“This legislation is a great example of what we can achieve when we prioritize community safety and work across party lines,” said DeStefano. “Providing first responders with the tools they need to save lives gives families across Suffolk County and beyond peace of mind, knowing they are better protected in emergencies. I’m proud to have played a role in expanding this critical safety measure.”
