Assemblyman Keith P. Brown, Elected Officials and Local Leaders Launch Memorial Day Weekend with Press Conference Supporting American Legion Post 360 Renovation Efforts
Assemblyman Keith P. Brown (R,C-Northport), alongside fellow elected officials, the 1653 Foundation and American Legion Huntington Post 360, kicked off Memorial Day weekend with a press conference to announce a fundraising push to support the renovation and revitalization of the American Legion Huntington Post 360 Hall and Halesite Harbor Walk.
Brown secured a $150,000 State and Municipal Facilities (SAM) grant through the New York State Assembly to jumpstart this important project. The goal is to raise a total of $500,000 to bring the full vision to life. The renovations will include the construction of a new harbor walkway and the creation of an Armed Forces Plaza, featuring memorials and public art installations dedicated to our nation’s veterans.
“This project is about more than just beautification; it’s about honoring the brave men and women who served our nation and providing a space where the community can reflect, remember, and find peace,” said Brown. “With the support of our state and local leaders and the generosity of the community, I know we can reach our goal and create a lasting tribute for generations to come.”
Senator Mattera said “As a proud and steadfast advocate for all who have served our nation, I applaud Assemblyman Brown’s leadership and the efforts of all involved to create a place where our community can honor, reflect, and come together to support our veterans and their families. This project is a meaningful tribute to our heroes and a commitment to preserving their legacy.God bless our veterans and God bless America”
Andrew Brady, Commander of the American Legion said, “I have been a member of the Post 360 for 23 years. I have been commander for the past 10 years. The projects we are doing and looking for support for will only help and benefit the Village and the Town. Our post has been an asset to the village and the community for over 100 years. Let’s keep it going. There are three types of people in this world. One watches things happen. Two makes things happen. Third said what happened? Which one are you?”
Huntington Town Councilwoman Theresa Mari said, “I am proud to stand alongside Assemblyman Keith Brown and our community partners in support of the revitalization of American Legion Post 360. This project honors the service and sacrifice of our veterans while creating a beautiful, meaningful space for reflection and remembrance. Investing in this hall and harbor walk is a powerful way to show our gratitude and ensure future generations understand the cost of freedom.”
Suffolk County Legislator Stephanie Bontempi said, “A walkable waterfront in and around Huntington Harbor is long overdue, so I am very excited that my office was able to secure a $250,000 Suffolk County grant towards Harbor Walk. It’s a wonderful project that will allow our residents access to one of the most beautiful settings in our Town.”
Vice Chairman of the 1653 Foundation Mark McAteer said, “The team at 1653 Foundation is thrilled to work on this cornerstone for our broader HarborWalk initiative. There are so many stakeholders along this expansive project, but none more important than the veterans at the American Legion.”
The project will also raise awareness about the alarming rate of suicide among veterans in New York state, an issue Brown has long championed in the Legislature (A.6037A).
