Slater, Yorktown Police Department Invite Residents to Safely Dispose of Medications at Upcoming Shed the Meds Event

Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C–Yorktown) will host a Shed the Meds event in partnership with the Yorktown Police Department and notable organizations Drug Crisis in Our Backyard and Alliance for Safe Kids. The event provides residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications, helping to combat the opioid crisis, prevent misuse and protect our environment.

Improper disposal of medication, such as flushing it down the toilet or pouring it down the drain, can pollute local water supplies. Safe disposal protects public health and the environment and keeps prescription drugs away from young people and others who may misuse them.

Event Details:

Tuesday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Yorktown Police Department, 1 Captain Kenneth Sgroi Plaza, Yorktown Heights

Instructions for attendees:

Please bring your medications in a clear plastic bag.

Acceptable items: Prescription medications, patches, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples and medications for pets.

Items NOT accepted: Needles, thermometers, inhalers, aerosol cans, ointments, lotions or liquids.

“Last year, we collected more than 150 pounds of medication. The event was a huge success, and it clearly shows how important this program is. I’m confident this year will be just as successful,” Slater said.

Before being elected to the New York State Assembly, Slater served four years as chief of staff to former Sen. Terrence Murphy. During that time, he played a key role on the Senate’s Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction, helping craft legislation to limit opioid prescriptions and securing $45,000 in funding to address the region’s drug crisis.

“As a member of the Health Committee and having worked on our state’s opioid crisis early in my career, this cause is deeply important to me and to our entire community. I hope to see everyone there. We can tackle this together.”

Media are welcome; interviews with Slater are available upon request. We encourage you to share these events on your community bulletin board or calendar.
