Simpson Supports ‘Everyone Can Play’ Bill

Proposal by lawmakers would create a grant program to help governments construct and refit playgrounds to be fully accessible to different developmental needs

Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C,I-Horicon) joined his colleagues in the Assembly and Senate Minority Conferences to advocate for handicap-accessible playgrounds within each state park under the “Everyone Can Play bill” (A.9923/S.8646). The legislators are concerned with the lack of playgrounds that meet children’s needs and want to ensure every child has access within each community with the help of a state grant program (A.9539/S.8626). Simpson was joined by Santii Patel, a resident of the Town of Greece and devoted advocate of the disability community.

“Santii Patel’s passion to help other children is admirable considering she is only nine years old. She has successfully raised the money needed to purchase a wheelchair-accessible swing for a local park. Miss Patel is a role model and an example that anyone at any age can help accomplish something great for their community.”

“Every child deserves to feel included, especially at a public playground with other kids playing and enjoying the outdoors. I think about my granddaughter and what life would be like if she were unable to enjoy the swings at a park like most other children because the equipment didn’t accommodate her needs,” said Simpson. “This should not be partisan. This is a proposal that lawmakers on both sides can rally around and benefits one of the most cherished constituents we have; our children.”
