Simpson Joins Farmers and Colleagues to Advocate for Whole Milk Options Back in Schools

Assemblyman Matt Simpson (R,C,I-Horicon) joined his Minority colleagues in the Assembly and Senate to advocate for returning whole and 2% milk options back into New York state school cafeterias (A. 9990). The federal government restricted schools to offer only skim or 1% milk as childhood obesity has been a growing concern and it was believed that these are the healthier options. Food and health experts, dietitians and farmers across the state advocated that whole and 2% milk are healthier options and offer more nutritional value while also providing sufficient revenue for local farms.

“It seems counterintuitive to offer energy drinks in school vending machines and frozen lunches for students yet control which type of milk should be consumed. Health experts agree that whole and 2% milk are substantially more beneficial for children's growth and provide necessary nutrients. Passing this legislation is common sense. Help our dairy farmers, listen to the research and let’s give our kids nourishment in school lunches again,” said Simpson.
