Solages’ Baby Monitor Security Bill Signed into Law
New law requires security features and clear warnings to protect children and families from unauthorized access
New York, NY – Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages announced today that Governor Kathy Hochul signed her legislation (A.5175A/S.9508) into law. The new law establishes security and warning-label requirements for internet-connected baby monitors. Sponsored in the Senate by Senator Andrew Gounardes, the law strengthens protections against unauthorized access to audio and video of children.
The law prohibits the manufacture, distribution, and sale of new internet-connected baby monitors unless they include security features to prevent unauthorized viewing or listening. It also requires a conspicuous, easily understandable warning informing consumers that the device connects to the internet and urging them to use its security features.
“Baby monitors are meant to deliver parents peace of mind,” said Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages. “The thought that a stranger could use such a device to watch or listen to our children is reprehensible. I celebrate the passing of this new law which will ensure that manufacturers are accountable for making sure that their products feature proper security protections to keep our kids safe, as well as information about how to use said features; and I thank Governor Hochul for signing this legislation and Senator Gounardes for his partnership in protecting our littlest New Yorkers.”
The law takes effect 90 days after signing.
