Safe Summer Family Fun with Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay and Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach & Engagement

Stony Brook, NY On Thursday, August 8th, Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay hosted a Safe Summer Family Fun event at West Meadow Beach with Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach & Engagement. With over 100 attendees, this free public event featured ice cream, family-friendly games, face-painting, a coloring book station, seasonal safety tips including skin cancer and drowning prevention, and other helpful resources.

Assemblywoman Rebecca Kassay shared, “It was a joy to welcome so many families at West Meadow Beach for an evening of summer fun and safety awareness. I’m deeply grateful to the Stony Brook Cancer Center and all of our partner organizations for helping make this day both enjoyable and informative for families across the district. Events like this remind us that public service is not just about policy: it’s also about creating inviting opportunities for residents to come together and see how their government and community are able to serve them.”

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Stony Brook’s Long Island Sound Beach Shuttle Program and Youth Enrichment Services were among the other organizations that were present with interactive games as well as safety and wellness resources for attendees.

Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Health Education Specialist Giuseppina Caravella shared, “We are so happy to be part of the Safe Summer Family Fun Night. It was a great night, lots of community members came out and enjoyed all the festivities. We had the opportunity to educate about sun-safety and skin cancer prevention with interactive games and fun giveaways!”

“Our team truly enjoyed educating attendees about skin cancer prevention in ways that were engaging and fun for all ages.” says Annalea Trask, Program Coordinator for Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach & Engagement.

Stony Brook Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Professional Jamie Ryan stated, “Stony Brook Children's Hospital was proud to join Rebecca Kassay and our local partners for the first-ever Summer Fun Day. While the day was filled with fun, we’re equally glad that drowning prevention education reached so many. With drownings on the rise, we stay committed to water safety education and protecting the children of our community.”

Youth Enrichment Services (YES) Community Wellness Specialist Maria Blanco shared, “At YES, our mission is to serve and empower youth and their families by creating a safe, supportive, and healthy environment. Events like these, help bring our community together, break down stigma, and connect individuals with the resources they need to shine.”
