Sarah was sworn in to the New York State Assembly representing the 136th district on November 12, 2020. The district covers Irondequoit, Brighton and parts of the City of Rochester. Sarah is a lifelong Rochester resident, graduating from East High School and SUNY Stony Brook. She has dedicated her entire career to public service; prior to running for office herself, she worked for over 20 years in the United States Senate – initially for Senator Hillary Clinton and then as Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s Deputy State Director.
Sarah lives in the Maplewood neighborhood of Rochester with her husband, John, and their three children, Jack, Sean, and Grace. As a working mom and mentor to other moms interested in public office, Sarah is committed to utilizing her community connections and experience to elevate the needs of children and families across New York.
In the Assembly, Sarah is in her third term, working tirelessly to improve the quality of life for her constituents and all New Yorkers. Her legislative priorities include continuing the fight for accessible, affordable childcare for all; caring for our seniors, ensuring equitable education access regardless of zip code, and creating critical policies needed to lift families out of poverty. Sarah is particularly proud of the work she has done for children, families, and students. She has helped secure historic state investments to lower childcare costs, expand eligibility for subsidies and support childcare providers. In 2025 she sponsored and led the fight for the Student Lifeline Act, a bill which strengthened mental health resources for students, ensuring that they have support both inside and outside of the classroom.
Now as Chair for the Majority Conference, Sarah plays a crucial role in Assembly leadership, organizing her fellow caucus members and facilitating critical conversations to help elevate the top priorities and issues of members statewide. This past year she was also elected into an officer position for the bipartisan Legislative Women's Caucus, serving as Secretary.
Outside of the Assembly, Sarah is a longtime volunteer at the Summit Federal Credit Union, currently serving on the Nominating Committee. She also serves as an Advisory Board Member for Vote Mama, a Political Action Committee dedicated to supporting moms who run for public office. Sarah is very proud to represent the 136th District and all of the incredible people and communities who call it home.
