Assemblyman Scott Gray Previews Upcoming Advanced Nuclear Forum in Latest ‘Gray Area’ Episode
In the latest episode of “The Gray Area,” Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) previews an upcoming informational forum, “Advanced Nuclear 101,” scheduled for July 8 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Bonnie Castle Resort and Marina in Alexandria Bay.
“Advanced nuclear technology has the potential to be a game-changer in how we generate clean, reliable energy,” said Gray. “This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the future of advanced nuclear and what it means for energy, jobs and economic growth here in the North Country.”
The forum will bring together leaders in energy, research and labor to discuss the future of advanced nuclear technology in New York state and its potential to support energy reliability, economic development and decarbonization.
“New York is taking a serious look at nuclear energy again, and the North Country needs to have a seat at that table—especially with Fort Drum potentially in the mix for a future site deployment,” Gray continued. “Safety is a top concern, and I want to make it clear: Today’s advanced nuclear technology is safer than ever before. We’re going to talk about that openly and directly.”
Confirmed participants include:
- Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear Technology (GAIN)
A U.S. Department of Energy program housed at Idaho National Laboratory that provides support for the commercialization of advanced nuclear technology - Nuclear New York
A nonpartisan advocacy group focused on nuclear energy’s role in decarbonization and grid reliability - The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)
Representatives will discuss the governor’s newly announced initiative to develop 1 GW of advanced nuclear power through NYPA - Clarkson University
Experts will provide an overview of grid modernization and nuclear-related research - Labor Leaders
Including Greg Lancette of the NYS Pipe Trades Association and Travis Flint of IBEW Local 910, who will speak on workforce opportunities in advanced nuclear development
The event is open to local elected officials, labor representatives, county, town and village governments, industrial development agencies in Jefferson and St. Lawrence County, Fort Drum stakeholders, Advocate Drum, Development Authority of the North Country and Farm Bureau board members. Topics will include economic impact, public safety and deployment timelines for nuclear energy development in New York. This is the first step in a process of advancing the conversation and gauging interest with community writ large engagement to follow at another time.
“As always, it’s an honor and a privilege to serve you. I look forward to the next edition of ‘The Gray Area’ and seeing you in the district.”
