North Country Celebrates Major Victory: Clarkson ROTC Program Closure Paused for Reevaluation

A Statement by Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown)

The North Country is celebrating a significant triumph today as news breaks that the proposed closure of the Clarkson University Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, along with nine other programs nationwide, has been paused for reevaluation. This decision marks a major victory for the region, protecting a vital pipeline for future military leaders and a key asset for the community.

The Clarkson ROTC program, renowned for its “Golden Knight” Battalion, plays a crucial role in developing highly skilled officers, particularly in STEM fields, and serves students from Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University, SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam.

“I have been a steadfast advocate for the region and will continue to work tirelessly with federal partners to ensure the Clarkson ROTC program remains open. This pause is proof of what we can accomplish when the North Country is in lock step,” stated Gray. “The Clarkson ROTC program is a bedrock of leadership development and a source of immense pride for the North Country. We are committed to continuing our efforts to secure its long-term future.”
