Felder, Eichenstein, Yeger, Deutsch Call for Immediate Flood Fix Call Flooding “Unacceptable” and “Clear and Present Danger”

Last week, a rainy-day wreaked havoc across multiple intersections in Boro Park and Flatbush. Resulting in excessive flooding, the dangerous conditions prompted Senator Simcha Felder, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Councilman Kalman Yeger and Councilman Chaim Deutsch to urge Commissioner Sapienza of the Department of Environmental Protection and Commissioner Trottenberg of the Department of Transportation to take immediate action.

The elected officials represent heavily affected areas in Boro Park, Midwood, and Madison. Working with constituents who regularly suffer from pooling and flooding after heavy rain, these issues are among the most challenging cases of bureaucracy. Although liable for both creating the problems and neglecting to correct them, the City dodges their responsibility for years by shifting the blame between agencies or incorrectly holding homeowners accountable.

“The safety hazard this poses to children, seniors and individuals with disabilities is of great concern. The approaching winter weather will quickly turn rain and snow to dangerous black ice. While the drainage system throughout our districts is undoubtedly in dire need of updating, the most heavily affected areas must be addressed quickly,” the Senator’s wrote.

“Community Boards 12 and 14 have repeatedly submitted lists of problem areas…These pooling and flooding issues require immediate attention.”
