Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C-Batavia) joined Sen. George Borrello, local officials, veterans, community members and the family and friends of Lt. Gary A. Scott on Thursday for a ceremony honoring the life, military service and ultimate sacrifice of the Le Roy native and U.S. Army officer who gave his life during the Vietnam War.

The ceremony included the unveiling of a commemorative sign along Route 19, just past Fort Hill Farm and across from Parmelee Road, recognizing Lt. Scott and his service to the nation.

Scott, a Le Roy native, was just 22 years old when he made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. The commemorative sign will serve as a lasting reminder of his courage, dedication and selfless service for generations of residents and travelers along Route 19.

“Lt. Gary A. Scott made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and today we have the opportunity to ensure that his courage and service are never forgotten,” said Hawley. “As a Le Roy native, Gary Scott’s story is a part of this community’s history, and it is only fitting that his name and legacy be permanently recognized here in his hometown. I am honored to stand alongside his family, friends, veterans and members of the community as we pay tribute to a young man who gave everything for our nation.”

Sen. Borrello, who represents the 57th Senate District, said the dedication provides an enduring way for future generations to learn about Scott’s sacrifice and the example he set through his service.

“Today is about ensuring that Lt. Gary Scott’s courage, service and sacrifice are never forgotten. More than half a century after he gave his life for our country at just 22 years old, his name will now have a permanent place here in his hometown of LeRoy,” said Borrello. “Generations of people traveling this highway will see his name and have the opportunity to learn the story of a remarkable young man who chose the harder path, led from the front and ultimately made the greatest sacrifice for his country.”

Borrello thanked Hawley, Scott’s family and the local community for their efforts in making the dedication possible after years of advocacy for the recognition.

“I want to thank Assemblyman Steve Hawley for partnering with me to make this designation a reality, as well as the many veterans, local leaders, friends and community members who advocated for this recognition for several years,” said Borrello. “Their persistence and commitment made today possible. It is a privilege to join Lt. Scott’s family and the Le Roy community in dedicating this highway and ensuring that his inspiring legacy of courage and selfless service will be recognized for generations to come.”

The dedication reflects the community’s continued commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of local veterans and ensuring that the stories of those who gave their lives for the nation remain a part of future generations’ understanding of Le Roy’s history.
