Assemblyman Schiavoni Announces LIRR Southampton Siding Extension Beginning March 30th to Improve Service Reliability

Sag Harbor, NY – Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni announced today that the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) has begun work to extend the siding at the Southampton Station, near North Main Street. The project begins on Monday, March 30th and will take place entirely within LIRR right of way.

A siding is a section of track that allows trains to move off the main line. This extension, which will lengthen the existing side by approximately 80 feet, will provide additional space for crews to stage trains, manage train movements, and reduce delays. The improvement is expected to be especially beneficial during the busy summer season, while also enhancing overall service reliability for years to come.

β€œIn conjunction with the work at the Hampton Bays LIRR station, the extension of siding at Southampton is welcome news as we continue to build on efforts to improve the South Fork Commuter Connection and provide increased service to the South Fork,” Assemblyman Schiavoni said.

The siding extension will support smoother daily operations along the Montauk Branch by improving the ability of crews to maneuver trains more efficiently. This added operational flexibility is a key component in ongoing efforts to strengthen the rail service for residents and visitors traveling to and from the South Fork.

This project reflects continued investment in critical transportation infrastructure and aligns with broader regional goals to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and support economic activity across the East End.
