Southampton, NY – Due to significant traffic backups on Sunrise Highway and reporting them to NYSDOT, the regional DOT director, Richard Causin, informed Assemblymember Schiavoni that DOT would be changing its work schedule to accommodate commuters and reduce traffic holdups during the peak season.

Starting July 16^th, 2026, and continuing until the project's scheduled completion on September 7^th, 2026, DOT will continue roadwork and bridge maintenance from behind the metal guardrails during the daytime. Additionally, DOT will shift working hours to the evening to eliminate the need for daytime lane closures, which have caused significant traffic in the westbound lane of Sunrise Highway.

New York State Assemblymember Tommy John Schiavoni said: “While I am pleased to see DOT working hard to maintain the safety and integrity of East End roads and bridges, I recognize that this kind of work can cause major congestion during the summer peak season. Thankfully, DOT regional director Richard Causin, at my request, has decided to shift work to the evenings and end daytime lane closures. This measure will reduce the daily disruption for residents, commuters, and visitors.”
