Flag Raises Awareness of Veterans’ Suicide at Lavine Event in Albany
ALBANY, NEW YORK – An emotional moment at the New York State Capitol in Albany today as a flag created to raise awareness about the alarming rate of veterans committing suicide is displayed. At the event, which was organized by New York State Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-North Shore), the Suicide and Remembrance (SAR) flag was formally presented to the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services, Viviana DeCohen. Lavine is the sponsor of a bill A07657 designating the "Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Flag" as the official state flag for the raising of awareness of veteran suicide. The legislation and ceremony are part of a broader effort to break the stigma surrounding the issue of veterans committing suicide and to honor the service and sacrifice of New York’s veterans.
The SAR Flag has already achieved a significant milestone as DeCohen has agreed to display it at every state agency with a VA liaison, ensuring statewide visibility and impact. The flag will also be prominently featured at the 250th Celebration of the USA Parade in New York City this summer, further amplifying its importance on a national stage.
Lavine is also the sponsor of additional legislation to help prevent veterans’ suicides: A9645, establishing the Veteran Suicide Mortality Review Board within the Department of Health, and A10163, which relates to pre-release briefings for incarcerated veterans regarding available federal and state benefits. As someone who lost high school classmates in Vietnam and had a cousin killed in World War II, the plight of those who have fought for our country after returning home is especially important to Lavine. “Even when our nation is in a period of stress, it is our honor, our responsibility, our solemn obligation to watch out and take care of our veterans, far too many of whom have come back home with a tremendous amount of anxiety,” he said. Adding, “It is my hope that this flag remains a lasting symbol of hope and recognition across New York State.”
Joining Lavine at the event were Kevin W. Hertell, U.S. Air Force Veteran and SAR Flag Creator, Assemblymember Steve Stern, Assembly Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chair, Senator Michelle Hinchey (Senate SAR Flag bill sponsor); Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chair, and veterans from New York State, including Fred Nielsen, retired U.S. Marine Corps major of Glen Cove, NY.
