ROCKVILLE CENTRE — Assemblywoman Judy Griffin (D-Rockville Centre, 21st District) heralded passage of the Adult Survivors Act:
“This is a profound day in the New York State Assembly specifically because we are empowering adult survivors of sexual abuse. Now, survivors in New York will have a choice to pursue justice - on their terms.
I applaud Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal for introducing this bill, championing it, and bringing it to passage today, and thank Speaker Heastie for his leadership in seeing this important bill through to a near unanimous floor vote of 140-3.
I commend the coalition of brave survivors, organizations like Safe Horizon, the many advocates, and my own colleagues - some of whom are survivors themselves - for your tireless efforts in championing this bill and bringing it to final passage today.
I am a proud supporter and cosponsor of the Adult Survivors Act and most importantly, the New Yorkers it will help to find justice on their path to healing. I was also a proud cosponsor of the Child Victims Act, and this bill is another chapter in the reforms our State must make to support the victims of crime and survivors of sexual abuse.
We must do all we can to empower those who have been harmed by others, no matter their age, so they may hold their perpetrators accountable - if they choose.
This bill is focused on those survivors who have yet to be heard. They have always deserved their day in court and to be supported by the State of New York.
Now that day has come.”
