Highway Dedication Ceremony Honors Legacy of Officer Michael E. Jensen

Rome, NY – At a solemn ceremony on Tuesday, September 30th, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-119) and Senator Joseph Griffo (R-53) stood with the family of Officer Michael E. Jensen to unveil new signage dedicating a portion of State Route 46 to honor the fallen Syracuse Police Officer and Rome native.

Joining Senator Griffo, Assemblywoman Buttenschon, Michelle, Paul, and the rest of Jensen family were Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr., Rome Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan, Assemblymembers who co-sponsored the legislation to make this dedication possible, as well as state and local dignitaries, law enforcement representatives from across the region, and community members.

The designated stretch of Route 46 was chosen with deep meaning. It begins at Prospect Street along State Route 46 (Black River Boulevard) in the City of Rome, close to where Officer Jensen’s family lived when he was born. From there, the road continues north, passing the street where his family resides today, and extends all the way to Dixon Drive in the Town of Western. Along this path, the route also travels past Delta Lake, a place where Officer Jensen spent countless hours fishing, relaxing, and making memories. This highway now stands as a living symbol of his journey, from his earliest roots in Rome to the places he cherished most.

Officer Jensen, just 29 years old, was killed in the line of duty on April 14, 2024, along with Lieutenant Michael Hoosock of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office while responding to a standoff in Salina, NY. He was more than a police officer; he was a mentor, a teammate, a role model, and a symbol of hope for an entire community.

He graduated from Rome Free Academy where he was a standout student and athlete, admired for his leadership, discipline, and humility. He went on to attend Le Moyne College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business, a master’s degree in Business Administration and a place in the hearts of professors, classmates, and friends.

Officer Michael Jensen served with deep conviction and unwavering honor. His life was rooted in compassion, courage, and a desire to protect those around him. His legacy now lives on, not just in the memories of those who knew and loved him, but in the highway that will forever bear his name.

The significance of the dedication was captured by the words of the Jensen family: “We are very honored and thankful for this tribute to Michael’s life. We would like to thank Senator Griffo and Assemblywoman Buttenschon for their hard work and dedication to ensure that Michael’s legacy is not forgotten. This road will not only bear Michael’s name, but will also be a lasting tribute to him. Every person that travels this road will be reminded of the hero that Michael was and his courage, kindness and unwavering commitment to serving and protecting others.” Assemblywoman Buttenschon shared: “Officer Michael Jensen’s life was a shining example of courage, kindness, and commitment to others. He gave so much of himself to protect and serve, and our community is forever better because of him. It is deeply meaningful to know that his name will now live on through this highway, serving as a daily reminder of the sacrifice, love, and strength he brought to everyone around him. I hope this tribute brings his family some comfort, knowing his legacy will never be forgotten.”

Senator Griffo reflected: "Officer Jensen was an exceptional person and a devoted and dedicated public servant who truly made a difference in his community. He is a hero who demonstrated remarkable courage and bravery while running towards danger, ultimately sacrificing his own life while in service to others. Dedicating this portion of road in memory of Officer Jensen is one small way that we can honor him and his family and ensure that his legacy will never be forgotten."

Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile expressed his gratitude: "I want to thank Senator Griffo and Assemblywoman Buttenschon for honoring Officer Michael Jensen and his family by dedicating a portion of State Route 46 in his name, so that years from now, people will be reminded of Officer Jensen's his ultimate sacrifice, and know that there are men and women throughout this great nation willing to risk all to serve and protect their communities.”

The highway passes through Officer Michael Jensen’s hometown, a place where he grew into the man who would choose a life of service. The route is symbolic, not only of where he came from, but of the values he stood for: duty, integrity, and compassion.

He was known for going above and beyond to connect with his community, always with a warm smile, always with patience and sincerity. Whether it was on patrol or mentoring young people, Officer Michael Jensen was the kind of officer who made others feel safe and valued.

Now, his legacy will live on not only through the lives he touched, but through the families who see his name and are reminded of the goodness that still exists in the world.

“To Officer Michael Jensen’s parents, Michelle and Paul, and to all who loved him, please know that your son’s legacy has become part of New York’s history,” Buttenschon added. “This is more than legislation. It is love in law. It is our way of saying, ‘We remember. We honor. We will never forget.’”

The ceremony included a reflection from the Jensen family, remarks from elected officials and other dignitaries, a prayer and the solemn unveiling of the sign. It was a day of remembrance and unity, honoring a life of service and sacrifice.
