Assemblywoman Buttenschon: MERIT Program Expansion Covers More Families of Fallen Heroes

“After a military family loses their loved one, the last thing on their minds should be financial security. I fully support expanding the Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute (MERIT) Scholarship to all families who have lost a member on active duty, because we owe it to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to be there for their families in the wake of tragedy.

“The MERIT program currently covers college tuition and room and board for Gold Star families – those who have lost military members in combat or in preparation for combat. Today’s immediate expansion includes students whose family members died or were severely and permanently disabled while serving in any official military capacity. This critical expansion will give more families the room to grieve and heal without worrying about whether or not they can afford an education. I’ll always work to find ways to stand up for our veterans and their families – it’s the least we can do after they’ve fought for the rights and freedoms we hold so dear.”
