Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D, I-Utica/Rome) hosted a recognition event on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to publicly thank food pantries, soup kitchens, and the volunteers who serve them, for their efforts to feed those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Food pantries and soup kitchens have seen an unprecedented increase in demand over the last 18 months, as many in our community have sought assistance from these organizations for the first time. The number of people served by food pantries across the country has increased by more than 50% since the start of the pandemic, according to Feeding America, a nationwide network of food pantries. Sadly, this is also the case in the 119^th District.

“Food pantries provide a lifeline for Mohawk Valley families, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when many wondered where their next meal would come from,” said Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon. “The employees and volunteers who show up every day to keep these critical community resources open and running are among some of our greatest hometown heroes. It’s important that we thank the staff at food pantries across our region for their selflessness and unwavering commitment to helping those struggling during such a great time of need.”

Assemblywoman Buttenschon presented representatives from several area food pantries a New York State Assembly citation on Tuesday as show of appreciation for their continuing work to fight hunger in the Mohawk Valley.
