Woman Power: Assemblyman Colton, Councilmember Zhuang Present Women of Distinction Honors

On Sunday, March 23, Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) and Councilmember Susan Zhuang (D-Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Dyker Heights, Boro Park and Sunset Park) held their 2025 Women of Distinction awards to mark Women’s History Month in March.

“As someone who has represented this area for nearly three decades, I have had the privilege of working with and observing the efforts of these extraordinary women,” said Assemblyman Colton. “Rarely do they look for recognition. Rather, they dedicate themselves to improving the lives of their neighbors, because they understand the pivotal role that civic activism plays in strengthening the fabric of the community. Not only residents but our local businesses benefit from their ongoing efforts and their quiet commitment to bettering the quality of life in the district and beyond, which helps to make our wonderful community a great place to live, raise a family and work.”

“I was proud to join Assemblyman William Colton in celebrating the achievements and contributions of all types of women whose leadership, dedication and service strengthen our neighborhoods and families,” said Councilmember Zhuang. “The Women of Distinction Awards provide an opportunity to honor these inspiring individuals and highlight their incredible work -- including mothers and women from all walks of life whose efforts often go unrecognized but are vital to our community. Congratulations to all the honorees!"

Among the 90 women who were honored were Civil Court Judge Tehilah Berman, Community Board 11 District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia, NYPD 62nd Precinct Community Assistant Weiyan Li, Onara Italian Ministry President Anna Maria Messina-Walsh, Club A-Elita President Leonora Bulychova, Regina Opera Director Fran Garber and Boxing Writers Association of America Board Chair Regina Andriolo. Longtime local activist Eileen LaRuffa was honored posthumously.

The celebration took place at FIAO’s Il Centro, 8711 18th Avenue.

Nominees, who always represent the diversity of the area, have made their mark in business, education, humanitarian work, military service, community/civic affairs, health care, government or volunteerism.
