Assemblyman Colton and Councilmember Zhuang Honor Local Women Leaders

The achievements of the women of southwestern Brooklyn were in the spotlight as Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) and City Councilmember Susan Zhuang (D-Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Dyker Heights, Boro Park and Sunset Park) awarded the annual Women of Distinction honors to an impressive roster of local women who have made a difference in the neighborhoods they call home.

“We recognize and we want everyone to recognize how many strong, wonderful, talented women we have right here in the area,” said Assemblyman Colton. “These women have played an important role in the community for many years. They may not be household names, but by their efforts, they help make this a great place to live, raise a family and work. And what they do has tremendous importance. When people get involved in the community, we all benefit.”

“It was a joy to celebrate this year’s recipients of the Women of Distinction Award,” said Councilmember Zhuang. “For almost 10 years, Assemblymember Colton and I have had a chance to recognize the incredible trailblazers in our community who set a new standard of what it means to be a leader. I want to thank all the women who contribute to our community to make our neighborhood a better place.”

The women who were honored always represent the diversity of the area, and represent a wide range of achievements, including among them local activists, businesswomen, government workers, teachers, nurses and police officers, all of whom were nominated by members of the community.

The event was held to mark Women’s History Month. It took place at FIAO’s Il Centro, 8711 18th Avenue, on Sunday, March 10.
