Assemblyman Colton Applauds DA Gonzalez for Securing Conviction in Schoolyard Assault

The case of a young Asian boy being beaten in the IS 201 schoolyard has resulted in a conviction, and Assemblyman William Colton (D—Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) is expressing his satisfaction at the outcome.

Hassan Saab, who was caught on video kicking and beating the 13-year-old Chinese boy on Sept. 28, 2023, was found guilty earlier this month of one count of assault in the second degree, one count of menacing in the third degree and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He will be sentenced on May 1. The case was tried in a bench trial before Justice John Hecht.

“Justice has been achieved,” said Assemblyman Colton, who praised Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez for appropriately pursuing the case and securing the conviction. “In this case, the community and its elected officials stayed united and spoke out with a single voice, demanding a fair resolution, and Brooklyn’s diligent DA, Eric Gonzalez, weighed the evidence and acted upon it. We are all grateful for this verdict, and hope that the equitable application of the justice system reassures the community at large that such actions will not be tolerated.”
