Maher: Ensuring Stability for Nonprofits

Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C-Walden) is pleased that a proposal to ensure prompt payments for nonprofit organizations that contract with New York has passed the Assembly. The bill would require the state to begin making payments for critical services such as early childhood education, mental health services, homeless housing programs and substance abuse treatment within 30 days of the contract being approved by the Office of the State Comptroller to help ease the financial burden on nonprofits.

“For far too long, organizations that rely on state funding have been forced to float money that often leads to staffing shortages and service disruptions because they can’t afford the lag time in between contract approval and disbursement. Streamlining this process and requiring the state to adhere to a deadline will help relieve financial pressure and help empower nonprofits to continue serving some of our communities’ most vulnerable populations,” said Maher.

“We are incredibly grateful for Assemblyman Maher’s leadership in securing timely payments for nonprofits that receive state funding. This bill will ensure nonprofit organizations like ours can focus on what matters most — getting resources out into the community, into the hands of the people who need them, when they need them. This advocacy reflects a deep understanding that delays don’t just affect contracts — they impact lives,” said Serra McDowall, Executive Director, Orange County Rural Development Advisory Corporation- Walden, a local nonprofit organization that helps provide foreclosure services and other resources for homeowners and renters.
