Assemblyman Brian Maher Offers Deepest Condolences After Line-of-Duty Death of Firefighter Mike Ryan

Assemblyman Brian Maher (R, C-Walden) expressed profound sorrow following the tragic line-of-duty death of Firefighter and Fire District Commissioner Michael “Mike” Ryan of the Phoenicia Fire District. Ryan suffered a medical emergency and went into cardiac arrest while responding to a report of an injured hiker in Shandaken on Saturday. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by fellow firefighters, forest rangers, police and EMS personnel, he did not survive.

“On behalf of my entire office, I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Firefighter Michael Ryan,” Maher said. “His selfless service and commitment to protecting others reflect the very best of our first responders. The loss of someone so dedicated to community safety is felt not only in Phoenicia and Ulster County, but across the Hudson Valley and all of New York.”

Maher noted that Ryan’s passing is a stark reminder of the risks that firefighters, EMS crews and emergency personnel take each day to keep residents safe.

“Our communities rely on the bravery and professionalism of our fire and emergency services,” Maher continued. “Whether responding to a rescue in the woods, a burning structure or a medical crisis, our first responders embody courage and compassion. I stand with all those who put their lives on the line for others, and I will continue to support efforts to ensure they have the resources, training and support they deserve.”

Maher also acknowledged the coordinated response by Phoenicia firefighters, state forest rangers, Shandaken police and EMS teams who worked valiantly to assist Ryan and attempt life-saving care.

“At this difficult time, we honor Mike’s legacy and recommit ourselves to backing the men and women of our fire and EMS services who serve as the backbone of safety in our communities,” Maher said.

Maher encouraged residents to keep the Ryan family and the Phoenicia Fire District in their thoughts and prayers.
