Maher Supports Bipartisan Legislation to Expand Transportation Access for New York National Guard
A press release from Meghan Hurlburt, Assemblyman Brian Maher’s chief of staff
Assemblyman Brian Maher (R,C–Walden) is supporting bipartisan legislation (A.10511), which would permit the free usage of subways, buses and trains for uniformed members of the New York National Guard with orders for duty or a certificate of an order for duty.
Existing law permits the uniformed members of the New York National Guard with orders for duty to pass free through all tollgates and tunnels, toll-bridges and ferries. The New York National Guard plays a critical role in our state’s emergency response system and provides rapid support during natural disasters, public health emergencies and security incidents.
This legislation would expand that access to include public subways, buses and trains, helping ensure Guard members can respond quickly and efficiently when called upon.
“Members of the National Guard are often deployed on short notice and asked to respond in critical situations across our state,” said Meghan Hurlburt, chief of staff to Assemblyman Maher. “Removing transportation barriers will help ensure they can reach their assignments quickly and safely, strengthening our overall emergency response efforts.”
Hurlburt said the bill is a practical step to support those who serve and improve coordination during emergencies, particularly in high-traffic areas where delays can impact response times.
“This is a common-sense measure that supports our service members and enhances public safety,” Hurlburt added. “By expanding access to public transit, we help ensure the National Guard can respond quickly and effectively when New Yorkers need them most. We applaud bill sponsor Assemblyman John Zaccaro for advancing this important legislation.”
Maher’s office said he will continue working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance policies that support the National Guard and strengthen New York’s emergency preparedness.
